A man needs to win a contest to marry a woman.

Is it a little surprising? Yes, this is how our ancestors got married. They had many competitions. The most notable of which is the Stone Lifting Competition (Ilavatta Kal).

Illavatta Stone? Today’s generation is less likely to know about it. Illavatta stone is a spherical stone weighing about 110 to 120 kg.


Lifting a 100kg stone is easier? You might think that its easy. But lifting a spherical stone weighing 110 kg is a difficult task.


Then how did our ancestors lift the Illavatta stone? They used to eat “Mappillai Samba” rice for a period of 48 days, along with daily exercise. This gave them the strength to lift the stone.

Even today, during the Pongal festival, youngsters participate in these competition under different categories such as 75kg, 90kg, 110kg and 120kg.
