Is it a little surprising? Yes, this is how our ancestors got married. They had many competitions. The most notable of which is the Stone Lifting Competition (Ilavatta Kal).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illavatta Stone? Today’s generation is less likely to know about it. Illavatta stone is a spherical stone weighing about 110 to 120 kg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


Lifting a 100kg stone is easier? You might think that its easy. But lifting a spherical stone weighing 110 kg is a difficult task. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


Then how did our ancestors lift the Illavatta stone? They used to eat “Mappillai Samba” rice for a period of 48 days, along with daily exercise. This gave them the strength to lift the stone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even today, during the Pongal festival, youngsters participate in these competition under different categories such as 75kg, 90kg, 110kg and 120kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
